Review: United as One

United as One United as One by Pittacus Lore
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I didn't know what to expect going into this book, since the previous book was the worst in the series in my opinion. Happily, the previous book, The Fate of Ten really was just a setup book, getting everything ready for the big finale. (This is like what they did with the Mockingjay movie. Part One was slower, not as much happened as it was setting everything up for Part Two.) And oh boy, this was a finale.

The whole book was pretty action-packed, a lot of things happened, a lot of things went down, which is how I like my books to be. The first hundred-or-so pages were kind of set-up-ish, like they weren't doing as much as preparing to do things, but the dialogue and character interactions kept it entertaining. Specifically, Nine. Nine is my OG book crush, the love of my book world. Another of the disappointing things of "The Fate of Ten" was the extreme lack of my literary husbando. United as One on the other hands is full of my dear Nine, and it was glorious. You can witness my gushing as I was reading, located in my Reading Notes below this review.

They really fixed like all of my gripes with the previous book in this one. More Nine. Check. Less sleeping all the time. Very check. More things actually happening. Check. Less depressing...... Eh...

The world felt very fucked in "The Fate of Ten", and it was very depressing to read about. Reading "United as One" the word "depressing" never crossed my mind. So although the situation might have gotten quite bleak (And it definitely did. Multiple times) it never felt depressing which was nice. I would always just be in suspense, like "holy shit they're getting their asses whooped shiitt aaagghhh." (view spoiler) And this is how it should be. I should be engaged not depressed reading about their troubles.

The characters were pretty good. Got some of that #characterdevelopment. I'm going to try to be vague so as to avoid spoilers. I quite enjoyed Five this whole book. (view spoiler) John was... Troubled. (view spoiler) Marina is the most underdeveloped main character in the series. Although she's nice and her healing is helpful, there's really not much about her. I try to give a shit about Marina but it's honestly hard. Whenever she's there it's just... Whatever. She's kind of a nobody, sad to say.

The last battle really fucked me up. I usually try not to swear too much in my reviews, but honestly I'm just so fucked after this that I'm not even trying not to. Like oh my god. Just look at my spoilery reading notes (at the bottom of this review) and you'll see how incoherent I was. They just, kept, fuuuuucking the characters like oh my god. Things kept happening that made me quite distraught to say the least. (view spoiler) I honestly couldn't believe it, it was so intense. So good job. Such a great step up from the previous book. The prologue wasn't too bad either. It was very needed, to see what happened after the war.

So yeah, pretty good conclusion to a pretty good series. This is actually my favourite series ever, tied with the Gone series by Michael Grant. It's actually pretty sad that after all these years it's actually over. I've been reading this series ever since either grade 5 or 6, so it's been with me for a really long time and it's very dear to my heart. I was about to say that I hope and am pretty sure that they're going to release one last "The Lost Files" bind-up, and I looked, AND THEY ALREADY DID!!!! HOW DID I MISS THIS!??!?! It came out like two months ago!!! Okay, less than that but still. How was I not on top of this? I actually can't believe this. I need it right now oh my god.

Anyway yeah, good shit. Read it.

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Lulu Is a Rhinoceros

Lulu Is a Rhinoceros by Jason Flom My rating: 3 of 5 stars The second I saw the cover of this book and read the synopsis I immediately thought that this was going to be a book that uses animals to create an allegory about transsexuality, as another installment in the growing genre of kid’s LGBTQA+ books. The whole "that's what she sees when she looks in the mirror" business felt really on the nose, and I feel like the authors purposefully used this wording in order to generate buzz around this book. In actuality, this felt like any other normal kids book. You have a character who feels misunderstood by their peers, and so they go on a "journey" to find and/or prove themselves and eventually end up finding peace with who they are and/or a group who accepts them. To me, the story was told in a way that presented Lulu like any other silly character in a children's book that had a silly problem stemming from their silly misco...

Review: Bossypants

Bossypants by Tina Fey My rating: 3 of 5 stars Let me set the scene: Last week I was in Phys Ed class playing the ol' badminton. Our school only has one gym, and my class 60 kids. So you can imagine how cramped it was. Each team had 3 people on the court at a time, and yes, it was a mess. And then one of my partners slammed me in the right eyeball with their racquet. My glasses broke into three pieces as they tumbled to the hardwood gym floor. This was the second time my face had been assaulted resulting in broken frames, so you could say I was a broken-glasses veteran. With my experience I didn't freak out, just was slightly annoyed. Nothin' some good old super glue can't fix, right? So I tried to continue playing but I quickly realized that I could no longer keep my eye open. It felt extremely irritated and even if I shut just the one and kept the other open, it still hurt. When I closed both of them, then it was a little better. Re...
