Review: モブサイコ100 2

モブサイコ100 2 by ONE My rating: 4 of 5 stars [Source] The end of the first volume very briefly introduced the best character Teruki Hanazawa, and the entirety of this second volume is comprised of the conflict that arises between him, Mob, the punks, and the Body Improvement Club. These episodes were super hype in the anime, and it’s just as hype here in its original manga form. ONE is absolutely fantastic at drawing fights and portraying movement to the point where he puts lots of trained and seasoned manga artists to shame. The art is actually really good: The hatching, the backgrounds, the use of perspective, the layout of the panels, the movement, the emotion, the faces, everything is actually SO well done. ONE’s art style just has this shitty kind of sheen that obscures all of that which is what gives the impression that the art isn’t good (when it actually is). The only complaint I have is that it felt like the, ahem, “power struggle” (I’m tryin

Review: Dr.STONE 1

Dr.STONE 1 by Riichiro Inagaki My rating: 2 of 5 stars 2.5 stars In a nutshell, Dr. Stone is a story about how two high school boys deal with the entirety of the human race being miraculously turned into stone. The phenomenon happens one day just as one of them is on the cusp of confessing to the girl they like. In this first volume the cause of the new stone age is not yet revealed, so if you’re not someone who can just go with the flow and not question too many things, this story might not gel with you too well. That being said, one of the characters is a scientific savant and says a lot of things that have actual scientific backup, so that might be enough to quell your worries. This was an overall enjoyable read, but there isn’t much that’s special about it. I could see how one of the lead boys and the antagonist could be seen as interesting characters to some people, but I myself don’t think too much of them. The only remarkable thing about t

Review: Fire & Flood

Fire & Flood by Demitria Lunetta My rating: 2 of 5 stars War. It’s a heavy little word. For some reason I’d had the idea that this was more of a rival gang situation. So, what do we have here? Fire & Flood , book one of the new Mount Olympus Academy series. If you can't tell by the series name, it's set in a Percy Jackson -esque world in that it incorporates gods and monsters from greek mythology. But more than anything, I’d say that it resembles Harry Potter in how the main character gets whisked away from their crappy life into a magical boarding school that has different “classes” which are like the different “houses” in HP. And you best believe there is a super mean rival who literally has “cronies”. While we’re doing comparisons, I’ll also throw in that not only is the main character in the Assassination Class , but that the authors also threw in the “Ass-Class” joke that fans of the Assassination Classroom series use. (Though

Review: Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon [Notes only]

Hawkeye, Volume 1: My Life as a Weapon by Matt Fraction My rating: 4 of 5 stars • pretty funny, made me chuckle a couple times right from the first couple pages • the art is absolutely atrocious. Or, lineart, I guess, since the colours are nice. Except there's no shading, so that's also shit. View all my reviews

Review: The Rosie Project

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion My rating: 4 of 5 stars My first impression upon finishing The Rosie Project was that this book was amazing. I loved the main character's voice and personality. This book was very enjoyable to read in the moment, however after completion and upon further contemplation I have some qualms. I had these feelings while I was reading as well, however they were buried deeper inside me, masked by the enjoyment the overall experience was giving me. I liked Don's character a lot, and thought he was very funny. Lots of laughing out loud. Because of this, I didn't like how at the end (view spoiler) [he changed for Rosie. I didn't think anything he changed for her (his verbature, his meal plan, his schedule, etc.) was necessary. All those things were part of his charm and part of what made him a highly efficient person. He literally made himself worse/dumbed himself down for Rosie, which I didn't like at al

Review: The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game

The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis My rating: 5 of 5 stars I think The Blind Side is the kind of book that anyone can read; football fans and foes alike. "Football haters too?!" Yes, dependant on the depth of your hostility. I literally did not care one bit for football prior to reading this book, and was very okay with keeping things that way. That was... Until recently. My boyfriend ex-boyfriend is hopelessly obsessed with football, and keeps trying to get me into it, with little success. A big reason I haven't been able to extract any semblance of entertainment out of this sport is definitely due to me not understanding the rules nor what-the-heck is ever going on. So I bought this book on his recommendation and started reading it in hopes of coming out with a better understanding of the game. And by golly... Would you believe it? It actually worked. The Blind Side is in large part a biography of offensive lineman Michael

Review: The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris My rating: 5 of 5 stars This book was absolutely fantastic! I enjoyed it immensely, and very much want to read all of the other books in this series. I accidentally listened to the end of the book via the audiobook, which I was unaware is an ABRIDGED version. So that was terrible. It also means that I actually did not take four months to finish this book. The audiobook basically just spoiled the ending for me, so I had to wait a few months to try and let it dissipate from my brain a bit before I actually finished reading it properly. Review: Along for the Ride

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen My rating: 2 of 5 stars This book was so incredibly contemporary . It was so… Life. Normal. It made me aghast as to how someone would even think to write something so mundane. Like, what was the spark? The initial idea that drove Dessen to write this? Especially considering the fact that she had apparently already written eight other books more-or-less exactly like this one. Getting paid was certainly the motivation, but that’s not what I’m asking. Anyway, this was my first Dessen novel. I have known of her ever since I was in fifth grade, and even back then she had so many books that they spammed my local bookstore’s online catalogue. This annoyed young me, and I swore to boycott this nuisance author. Fast Forward to now, and I just want to see what all the fuss is about. I didn’t think this book was bad . I just think it got kind of boring after 200 pages of nothing, and then the realization that I still had almos

Review: School Rumble, Vol. 7

School Rumble, Vol. 7 by Jin Kobayashi My rating: 4 of 5 stars This volume was really fun!!!!! What a good time!! I didn’t laugh at all during the previous volume, but this volume had me giggling a few times, let me tell you! And like, scream-type giggling, the best type, because of the specific kinds of situations that were making me giggle, if you know what I mean… Please… stay over tonight!! Make me… Make me into a man!! So yeah, interesting and funny situations and scenes were in this volume, and that was great. The relationships between the characters are getting more and more complex and intertwined, and I love it. It is so juicy. I can't wait to continue reading. Please consider giving this review a "Like" if you've made it this far, it helps me out a lot! And follow me if you want more! Review: School Rumble, Vol. 6

School Rumble, Vol. 6 by Jin Kobayashi My rating: 3 of 5 stars Meat. This image made me giggle in a way and for long enough that I actually became light headed. Unfortunately this was were the laughs both started and ended with this volume. This volume is entirely composed of the Sports Festival, and on-brand unrealistic hijinks ensue. Even though this was not funny, it was still decently entertaining and a nice dose of School Rumble -ness that we all could use every once in a while. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this in my reviews yet, so I’ll just say it here: I love the way this series was translated and printed in English, and here are my two reasons: 1. There are always like six pages of translation notes at the back of every single volume—which is A LOT—which I love reading along with the story since they give insight into the way the manga was originally written. This makes me feel like I’m getting more of the authentic reading

Review: The Show Must Go On

The Show Must Go On by Kate Karyus Quinn My rating: 4 of 5 stars Because lucky me, even though I am 100 percent talking out of my ass, it turns out my ass is a secret genius. Wow. The Show Must Go On was surprisingly great. And by “great” I mean that this is very likely the best romance I’ve ever experienced (including books, movies, tv, etc.). It was also filled to the brim with funny lines like the one above, so for the first time in my life I found myself constantly laughing-out-loud while reading a book. But… then the ending happened… and it left me feeling insanely disappointed, which is what knocked a whole star off of my rating. Will actually walks over to [the bookshelf], like he's unable to resist the siren call of literature. Obviously, despite losing the glasses, his nerd instincts are still strong. First and foremost, since it doesn’t look like there are any reviews by people who have ever read Quinn before, I just want to st

Review: Swagger [Notes only]

Swagger by Carl Deuker My rating: 3 of 5 stars RTC. Until then, my notes: • this book has the most actual playtime out of any sports novel I've ever read so far • i really dislike the really short chapters • i really dislike the juvenile writing style, however it does perfectly match the main character • i'm in actual mourning after the author *major spoiler* (view spoiler) [killed off Levi (hide spoiler) ] . That monster. i read it while i was foam rolling and had to shove my kobo awake and get up to take a walk. i actually cried so much and so hard • i let it sit for a few days and I still shed a single tear for *same major spoiler* (view spoiler) [Levi (hide spoiler) ] after I came back to this book. this is the single saddest *same major spoiler* (view spoiler) [character death (hide spoiler) ] I have the ever experienced View all my reviews

Review: This One Summer

This One Summer  by  Mariko Tamaki My rating:  3 of 5 stars The last words on the second-last page of the book: Maybe I will have massive boobs. Me: Lol what if this is the last sentence and it’s about boobs. Me: *flips the page* Boobs would be cool. The absolute madlads did it. They made the last *two* sentences about boobs. Anyway, hi, hello, welcome to this review, lol. I haven’t written a review in a hot minute because of school, but I read this  for  school and have some things I wanna say so here I am!!! This One Summer  is… about… one summer. A super duper regular-on-all-accounts summer. Like, so insanely regular that that’s what I thought the point was: to make the most normal contemporary book possible about what being a kid on a beach in summer is like. And I thought it succeeded with flying colours at this. It was even borderline boring at parts, but then I would remember what I was reading and would think, “... actually--yeah, that’s about right,” and contin

Review: Everything's Trash, But It's Okay

Everything's Trash, But It's Okay by Phoebe Robinson My rating: 0 of 5 stars DNF because I had to return it to my library, but I ain't even mad. This seemed like it was finally going to be a book written by a comedian that is actually funny—and it WAS... In the beginning—but it started to feel like accidentally walking into a feminist rally. It was non-stop preaching about "you have to do this or else you're a bad person!!", and it's like oh my god shut up. Nothing against feminism, but damn did this chick become annoying as hell. I'm sure it was probably/maybe/possibly just that essay I was on, but honestly it was such a buzzkill that it completely shattered any and all motivation I had to continue listening to this before its return date. Also I'm shocked that I haven't seen anyone talk about the writing style, because it is... Definitely something. She literally writes her essays in the same shorthand way one would write a

Review: 毎日キスしていいですか? 4 [Mainichi Kiss shite ii desu ka? 4]

毎日キスしていいですか? 4 [Mainichi Kiss shite ii desu ka? 4] by Hatsuharu My rating: 1 of 5 stars Ah. It’s over. *cough* Finally *cough*. So, TLDR: Don’t read this series, it is bad . It’s about a guy who sexually and emotionally abuses a really dumb girl who’s too naïve to know that he’s even doing anything wrong. The problem is that this is presented as being romance . Read my previous reviews for more on that (links below). On this volume specifically, has anything changed? A little bit, yes, but ultimately: no. Nagi (the abuser in question) just reaaaallly comes off as a super horny teenager. So every time he jumps onto Kurumi (the dumb girl in question) it doesn’t feel romantic at all, it just feels like some stupid kid using another stupid kid to fulfill his selfish desires. And then, yes—AGAIN—Kurumi literally says “no" [s] and “I don’t like it" [s] , yet the motherfucker literally does not give a single micron of a shit and keeps going. Afte
