My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Everything Matson puts out just keeps getting better and better.
The Unexpected Everything is about what happens during one of Andie's summers. Andie is the daughter of a politician, and she thinks she has the whole summer planned out. That is, until the unexpected... EVERYTHING happens! Ha, you see what I did there? Get out? Sorry.
At first I wasn't super into this. I don't usually read contemporary novels, and I had just finished reading two OTHER contemporaries, so I was kinda contemporary-ed out. I got more into the book by page 100. Matson just knows how to write a fricken contemporary, alright? Even though it's literally just life, and these are just random people doing things, it's entertaining and it makes me care about the characters and what's going on. Am I the only one who finds this weird? There's no chase scenes, no explosions or mystery, but it's still a compelling read non the less.
I don't really know what else to say. My ARC copy is 519 pages long, and filled to the brim with things that happened this one summer. There are a few easter eggs from Matson's other books (all of which I have read) which were a delight. There was only one that I really got, and that had me screaming internally because I was excited I got the reference. But then there were lots of tiny things that had me wondering if I was loosing it or if that was actually an easter egg. Non the less, a treat for returning Matson fans.
So which is my favourite Matson book? I really don't know. Second Chance Summer, Since You've Been Gone and now The Unexpected Everything are all great books. We can ignore Amy and Roger's Epic Detour because that was just incredibly mediocre, would not recommend. I mean, I only gave SOS four stars back when I read it, but thinking back it was a really good book and I did enjoy it. I gave SYBG five stars yet I barely even remember anything from it. I feel like this evens the playing field. So I dunno. All of them are great reads.
