Review: UnEnchanted

UnEnchanted UnEnchanted by Chanda Hahn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

EDIT: I just realized that this was my 100th book review!! Yay!

"Not every tale has a happy ending. In fact, many of them are grim."

This story is very compelling. It's about our protagonist Mina Grime, who finds out she's actually Mina Grimm, a decedent of the Grimm brothers. They got cursed and tricked by some evil Fae and Mina inherited their curse. The curse is that she has to live through every Brothers Grimm story, or die trying. The book was pretty good!... If you look past all the grammatical errors, and I heard people complaining about issues in the plot, so ignore that too!

Okay, hear me out.

The first time I read this book was waay back in 2012, I think. Actually it might have been 2013... I dunno. All I know is it was after grade six, which means that what I said in my Reading notes was wrong. Whoopsiess. I digress! I got this as a free e-book from the iBooks store back when my iPod was the only technology I owned. I read it... and I loved it! I usually never spent money on e-books, but I HAD to get the second book (which was the latest book at the time). I loved that one even more, and I waited impatiently for the third book. I preordered it and everything. When it finally released I dropped everything and read it. It was a huge disappointment.

It was mostly because of the writing. I didn't think it was good, and I had finally begun to noticed all the editing errors sprinkled throughout the whole book. I wasn't impressed. When it came time to preorder the next book I only did so because I got a bonus story with it. When I received my e-book I didn't read it. The last book came out earlier this year, and I didn't bother preordering it. Plus, it costs a whole six dollars! What!? I'm used to paying two, three dollars max on an e-book. Heck, I'm used to just getting the free e-books. Don't look at me like that! I'm a poor student with no credit card. Don't judge me.

So anyway, with all the hype for the last book I decided I wanted to finally start reading the series again. I started rereading the third book (the disappointing one), but after 50 or so pages I realized I had no idea what the heck was going on. So I started from the beginning, and now here we are. Wow three paragraphs of backstory, go me.

There was so much nostalgia. All the nostalgia. I had a really open mind rereading this because I knew there would be a lot of mistakes in it... aaaand there definitely were. But this is something I've noticed about me: as long as there's likable characters, a cool story, and good writing I'll probably like the book. I knew what to expect with the writing so it didn't bother me, so I was set! I don't really ever care about plot holes or anything, I read to be entertained so if I'm entertained it's good for me.

So yeah, I liked it. I don't know what else to say. My enjoyment definitely has to do with my previous history with this book, but that doesn't matter because I still had a great time.Off to the next one off to the next one!

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Lulu Is a Rhinoceros

Lulu Is a Rhinoceros by Jason Flom My rating: 3 of 5 stars The second I saw the cover of this book and read the synopsis I immediately thought that this was going to be a book that uses animals to create an allegory about transsexuality, as another installment in the growing genre of kid’s LGBTQA+ books. The whole "that's what she sees when she looks in the mirror" business felt really on the nose, and I feel like the authors purposefully used this wording in order to generate buzz around this book. In actuality, this felt like any other normal kids book. You have a character who feels misunderstood by their peers, and so they go on a "journey" to find and/or prove themselves and eventually end up finding peace with who they are and/or a group who accepts them. To me, the story was told in a way that presented Lulu like any other silly character in a children's book that had a silly problem stemming from their silly misco...

Review: Bossypants

Bossypants by Tina Fey My rating: 3 of 5 stars Let me set the scene: Last week I was in Phys Ed class playing the ol' badminton. Our school only has one gym, and my class 60 kids. So you can imagine how cramped it was. Each team had 3 people on the court at a time, and yes, it was a mess. And then one of my partners slammed me in the right eyeball with their racquet. My glasses broke into three pieces as they tumbled to the hardwood gym floor. This was the second time my face had been assaulted resulting in broken frames, so you could say I was a broken-glasses veteran. With my experience I didn't freak out, just was slightly annoyed. Nothin' some good old super glue can't fix, right? So I tried to continue playing but I quickly realized that I could no longer keep my eye open. It felt extremely irritated and even if I shut just the one and kept the other open, it still hurt. When I closed both of them, then it was a little better. Re...
