Review: Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 9

Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 9 Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 9 by Oh! Great
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Aya Natsume

The tournament arc—and simultaneously the self proclaimed “final chapter”—begins!

This volume kind of made me regret not paying too much attention to the ancestor’s (feudal Japan) arc, because there’s a lot of callbacks to it and every time I’m just like:

Jim Carrey from the movie ‘Dumb and Dumber’ being confused

But I mean, it’s not my fault that that arc bored me to death.

I think the worst part about this series is how booooring all the tangents Oh!Great-sensei always makes his characters go on are. This volume had some also, as literally every volume does, and I think the quality of each volume is largely proportionate to the percentage of dialogue which is made up of tangents. This one kept it decently low, and as such I was kept decently entertained and gave the volume a decent rating.

This volume was only decent at best because for the hype for this tournament arc, it has been very underwhelming so far. It has pretty much comprised of only useless fighting, which isn’t interesting. Maya is basically dead after being beaten to a pulp by… *looks at notes* Tetsuhito Kagiroi, so she’s been out this whole arc so far, and all of the hard hitters have been standing back and letting the losers on their teams (shoutout to Asshat who made the cover for volume 17) take care of the fighting in the early rounds so not a single fist of Nagi’s, Maya’s (duh), either Takayanagi brother’s, Bunshichi’s, Isuzu’s, or Bob’s has been swung. (view spoiler)

One of the only okay things that happened was that Aya had an okay-ish faceoff with that guy who looks like Masataka Takayanagi, *returns to notes*, Hirohiko Kabane. Jesus Christ all of these people have such complicated names. Anyway, apparently I was supposed to recognize him from his ancestor in the feudal Japan arc, but you know how my reaction to that was. He was pretty strong, and Aya was pretty strong too, so it was a decently okay fight to read. You know it can’t really be much better than that when you don’t really give a damn about the characters fighting.

The next and even better thing was that, contrary to what I said earlier, there actually were some big-boy punches thrown. Kind of. And in the same vein as Aya’s and Hirohiko’s fight, it didn’t even happen in conjunction with the tournament so what is even the point of the tournament??

Back in the day after Mitsuomi had been the big dog for a while, Bunshichi told him that if anyone else dies (in reference to Shin dying), he won’t hesitate in either beating the shit out of or killing Mitsuomi (don’t exactly remember which). So, in light of Maya’s new potato-esc state, Bunshichi barges in on Takayanagi headquarters to make true on his promise. (view spoiler)

I didn’t even want to write a review for this volume because it ended pretty hype and I wanted to immediately continue on to the next one, and yet here I am, and hour later and having written a novel about these volumes. I am too much.

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War

Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War by Linda F. McGreevy My rating: 0 of 5 stars This is a very unique and interesting academic text. There are no other examinations of the German artist Otto Dix, his war experience, and his war-related art that are quite as in-depth as this one, while also covering a wide range of different aspects and angles of not only the artist's story, but also the Great War's. I used this as a source for a University research essay I wrote on the effects of Dix's war experience on the creation and effects of his painting Skat Players (1920). I was very late in starting my research so I unfortunately had to stick to only reading the information I could use for my own examination, rather than being able to devour this book in its entirety. However, the library requires this book be returned at the end of January of next year, so I have some time now to actually finish this book since the semester has finished...

Review: Spells & Sleeping Bags

Spells & Sleeping Bags by Sarah Mlynowski My rating: 3 of 5 stars This book was infuriating. Miri was super annoying during book 2, but she started this book off with some funny burns toward Rachel which made me think maybe she would be better in this book. Ha. No. She wasn’t. Miri. Oh Miri Miri Miri. So dumb. And it was annoying how it seemed like she didn’t even learn anything from the last book. She’s still all about saving the world and whatnot and being a dumbass. And she talked about poofing up money to help her help people, which is extremely illogical because she knows that poofing up money means she’s stealing money from somewhere else. Way to “help” out the world you fucking idiot. For the majority of this book I reckon she was under some kind of “emotion amplifying” spell but honestly that’s no excuse since she’s still her dumbass self.
