Review: Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 7

Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 7 Tenjo Tenge, Vol. 7 by Oh! Great
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Maya Natsume

Ho-ho-ho-holy shit—that ending. Yo, if I was reading this series as the volumes were being published I would be capital “P” Pissed!!! Jesus. Obviously it has got to be some sort of dupe/trick, but it’s still shookening nonetheless.

So, back to 3-star rating regularly scheduled programming, eh? These volumes had a much better balance of fighting and… Not fighting, so they were a lot more enjoyable for me. There is still waaay too much friggen voice over (characters talking over scenes either in the form of internal thoughts or future narration) though. That’s still super annoying, useless, and makes it harder to follow the actual story.

You know how I was complaining about how all the boys are all annoyingly stoic and emotionless? I was reminded in the first few pages of this volume that there is actually an exception to that: Takayanagi Jr, aka ex-best character. I like how he actually has feelings and that his crush on Aya always gets little highlights here and there. It was also nice how we kind of got a teeny tiny bit of MayaxSouichirou (and MayaxTakanahashi Sr., an even teeny tinier amount) action, though in a super vague and stoic way as usual. God damn it.

Also for the record: I still ship MayaxTaka Sr., though I think it’s cute that Sou likes Maya. I was definitely AyaxSou for a long while, but during the beginning of this volume I was thinking that AyaxTaka Jr. would be cute, so I dunno. In the same vein it also feels like I might be leaning more towards MayaxSou now too, though I honestly don’t even know for sure anymore. I just kinda go with the flow of things at this point.

Honestly though, Takanahashi Jr. has started acting like a good character again so maybe I ought to un-revoke his best character status (which as you probably don’t recall I vaguely alluded to doing in my review of volumes 3-4). We’ll have to see about that in later volumes, as Takanahashi Jr. was unfortunately put in the backseat of these volumes, as we finally see what Maya and Souichirou have been up to during the past two volumes in which they were absent.

Thank God they finally showed up, because the rest of the gang wasn’t doing too well of a job holding up the series without them *cough* 1-star rating *cough*. We also got more Takanahashi Sr. which was great! I always love seeing him as well—even though he’s a dickhead now—because he still has a rose-tint in my eyes as I reminisce to the good ol’ days of his character in the Flashback arc. I still like to pretend that he’s actually a good guy, deep, deep, deep down. I love seeing him be protective of his younger brother and Maya and of course being badass. I guess I just always love when my favourite characters are badass, eh?

So yeah, the final battle is going to be hype hopefully. I feel like seeing a Nagi and Takanahashi Sr. tag-team is going to be cool.

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War

Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War by Linda F. McGreevy My rating: 0 of 5 stars This is a very unique and interesting academic text. There are no other examinations of the German artist Otto Dix, his war experience, and his war-related art that are quite as in-depth as this one, while also covering a wide range of different aspects and angles of not only the artist's story, but also the Great War's. I used this as a source for a University research essay I wrote on the effects of Dix's war experience on the creation and effects of his painting Skat Players (1920). I was very late in starting my research so I unfortunately had to stick to only reading the information I could use for my own examination, rather than being able to devour this book in its entirety. However, the library requires this book be returned at the end of January of next year, so I have some time now to actually finish this book since the semester has finished...

Review: Spells & Sleeping Bags

Spells & Sleeping Bags by Sarah Mlynowski My rating: 3 of 5 stars This book was infuriating. Miri was super annoying during book 2, but she started this book off with some funny burns toward Rachel which made me think maybe she would be better in this book. Ha. No. She wasn’t. Miri. Oh Miri Miri Miri. So dumb. And it was annoying how it seemed like she didn’t even learn anything from the last book. She’s still all about saving the world and whatnot and being a dumbass. And she talked about poofing up money to help her help people, which is extremely illogical because she knows that poofing up money means she’s stealing money from somewhere else. Way to “help” out the world you fucking idiot. For the majority of this book I reckon she was under some kind of “emotion amplifying” spell but honestly that’s no excuse since she’s still her dumbass self.
