Review: Sunstone, Vol. 1

Sunstone, Vol. 1 Sunstone, Vol. 1 by Stjepan Šejić
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really don't know how to rate or review this, so I'll start with a little backstory.

So at some point, a month or more ago my friend told me about how a mutual friend/acquaintance of ours (we'll call him Big Gay Stan) had brought lesbian porn comics to school. And was casually reading them in the English class they had together. We had a few chuckles about this and went about our merry ways.

Yesterday I had a meet-up with a different friend. Right when we met up they informed me that Stan was also going to probably join us. I was looking forward to spending time with my friend, but I nodded anyway. So Stan comes and we're off. He's kind of shy and doesn't say much at first, as we hadn't talked in nearly a year. I eventually end up breaking the ice by accidentally punching myself in the jaw (as I do) and all of us laugh our asses off.

Later, we're sitting on the grass waiting for our respective busses to come. Stan pulls out a comic volume and I am reminded of the porn comics I was told about earlier. I inquire about this, but he shows me that he's reading Rat Queens, a different series also by Stjepan Sejic. I jokingly voice my disappointment at his current lack of illustrated pornography and he happily offers to bring them for me tomorrow. I don't think much of it when I say that sounds fantastic.

The next day my good friend Chris Pratt has a scene he's performing at lunch, so obviously I go to watch him. Who else happens to be there but Big Gay Stan! (There were lots of other people there too of course, they're just not relevant to this story.) We all say our hellos and I sit down. To my surprise Stan whips out four volumes out of his bag and hands them to me. Upon seeing their covers realization immediately dawns on me what I'm holding, and a mischievous grin spreads across my face.

I cheekily flip through one of them as he tells me I can take them home to read them. This alarms me, as I didn't even know he was going to actually bring them, never-the-less let me bring them home to read. I didn't even honestly want to read them, this whole thing was just a funny haha-reading-porn-comics-in-school joke to me. Now here we are. I obviously accepted his generous offer and have read this first volume of Sunstone.

Can't say this is something I thought I would ever read. Not just this book specifically, but erotica in general. Though I have recently been... Not really "experimenting" but something lesser than that, with sexuality. Before this time in my life I feel like I wouldn't have been able to read this at all, would have been way too squeamish. Now I just took it in stride, and am... Excited? I guess? To read the next three volumes that Stan lended me. The whole situation is just fun.

Anyway this has not really been a review so far. This series is about Lisa and Ally, two sexual nerds who meet online and then meet in person to fufil their specific desires. There's a lot of titties. I noticed they look surgically enhanced (specifically Lisa's) and I wonder if we'll ever get to find out about that. A lot of the whole naked female body, really. It was just nudity though, there was no imagery of penetration or contact with the nether-regions at all. It was still pretty spicy to me at least, but let's face it my experience with this stuff is basic at best.

Art wise, I'm temped to say that Sejic is a god. Just look at the covers. Inside there's even more paintings that are borderline photorealistic and it tingles my artistic tangles in all the right places. Though of course for the actual pannels themselves it's a lot more sketchy, but Sejic pulls it off none-the-less. I have actually been watching Sejic's main account on DeviantArt for a few years now, and didn't find out that he made comics until somewhat recently.

Would I recommend this book? I dunno. At this point of writing I still don't know what to rate it. At multiple points I felt like there was way too much build up, that these chicks just needed to friggen fuck already, so those parts were a bit too slow for my liking. There also wasn't much that happened in general. There was the aforementioned build up, then obviously they screw, then more build up until they screw again and... Yeah. Not much else happens. I feel like more has to happen in the next volumes, right? We'll see. My deadline to give these back to Stan is the day after tomorrow, so I've got some reading to do ;).

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War

Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War by Linda F. McGreevy My rating: 0 of 5 stars This is a very unique and interesting academic text. There are no other examinations of the German artist Otto Dix, his war experience, and his war-related art that are quite as in-depth as this one, while also covering a wide range of different aspects and angles of not only the artist's story, but also the Great War's. I used this as a source for a University research essay I wrote on the effects of Dix's war experience on the creation and effects of his painting Skat Players (1920). I was very late in starting my research so I unfortunately had to stick to only reading the information I could use for my own examination, rather than being able to devour this book in its entirety. However, the library requires this book be returned at the end of January of next year, so I have some time now to actually finish this book since the semester has finished...

Review: Spells & Sleeping Bags

Spells & Sleeping Bags by Sarah Mlynowski My rating: 3 of 5 stars This book was infuriating. Miri was super annoying during book 2, but she started this book off with some funny burns toward Rachel which made me think maybe she would be better in this book. Ha. No. She wasn’t. Miri. Oh Miri Miri Miri. So dumb. And it was annoying how it seemed like she didn’t even learn anything from the last book. She’s still all about saving the world and whatnot and being a dumbass. And she talked about poofing up money to help her help people, which is extremely illogical because she knows that poofing up money means she’s stealing money from somewhere else. Way to “help” out the world you fucking idiot. For the majority of this book I reckon she was under some kind of “emotion amplifying” spell but honestly that’s no excuse since she’s still her dumbass self. (view spoiler) [Her figuring out that Fake Rachel wasn’t real Rachel was nice and all but felt a bit...
