Review: The Fate of Ten

The Fate of Ten The Fate of Ten by Pittacus Lore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh my god....... is the only way I can think to start this review. This series.... Kills me.

Okay I'll try to just hop right in, mimicking this book. The Fate of Ten got straight to business and destroyed me from page eight. Even from the way the previous book ended I was still unprepared. After that initial shock... I must say, it... Well I mean, it didn't slow down per-say but... Let's just say that John took two naps and then that was the first 100 pages gone.

This was something that slightly worried me ever since they announced they were splitting up th last book. That in order to get that ($)page count($) they might need to add some filler or draw out scenes. Welp. The whole begining of the book was John and Sam dicking running around the city, complaining about being tired (which I totally get, but still), napping, and seeing the hopelessness of their situation. I totally get that they were trying to make it realistic, I completely understand that what John was doing was extremely exhausting, but they could have not spent one hundred pages on this.

This book got very depressing, and stayed so for the whole first half of the book. I don't know if you noticed, but it took me nine whole days to finish this thing. I finished the second half of the book in one sitting. Before that I just wasn't in the mood to read about how fucked they were. And they were very fucked indeed. Pardon my French. After about the middle, more actual THINGS started happening and my wrists stopped looking so tasty.

After that it was pretty good. It had all the great characters we've come to love, and there was actually quite a bit of Adam which almost made up for the lack of Nine. Almost. Adam in the main series has just never been as good as the Adam I fell in love with from the Novellas. Sigh.

Anyway, this review seems pretty negative for a four-star review. And you don't know how much it pains me to give this four stars. My first instinct was duh, it's a Lorien Legacies book, automatic five stars. And that's what I've given it on Goodreads it as a placeholder while I'm writing this review. But during the writing of this... I've come to accept that OVERALL... This was not as good as the other books. Just because the first half wasn't up to snuff. The second half was pretty good though.

I started writing this review right after I finished the book, and as you can see from how I started this review, the last part of this book was definitely some of that good good. Things actually went down, go figure. Though the end wasn't as intense or shocking as the last book, it still left me dazed. More about my thoughts on the ending in the spoilery section.

Soooo yeeah. I don't even want to say that, "ohhh this the worst book in the series" because in the end it was still a good read and very much worth it, and I can't wait to see how the series'll end from here. This doesn't feel like "the worst book" (even if technically it might have been) or whatever. It was just a little bumpy. It (eventually) moved the plot along and enough (ended up) happening that it feels sufficient.

I just feel like they could have cut some stuff out, moved it along and just had everything in this book instead of splitting it between two books. Sure, having it split up looks better on my shelves because all of the books are the same width, but I would have prefered just one bigger better book honestly. Like what Marissa Meyer did with the last book in The Lunar Chronicles, Winter. That book has over 800 pages but they didn't split it up and it was magnificent. No filler, nothing extra, just pure bliss. And Meyer didn't rush anything either which could have potentially been a problem.

All said and done, I can't wait for the last book, and I absolutely can not wait for the next novella collection to come out. I have a really good track record with those.

Spoilery Section Yay!!

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War

Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War by Linda F. McGreevy My rating: 0 of 5 stars This is a very unique and interesting academic text. There are no other examinations of the German artist Otto Dix, his war experience, and his war-related art that are quite as in-depth as this one, while also covering a wide range of different aspects and angles of not only the artist's story, but also the Great War's. I used this as a source for a University research essay I wrote on the effects of Dix's war experience on the creation and effects of his painting Skat Players (1920). I was very late in starting my research so I unfortunately had to stick to only reading the information I could use for my own examination, rather than being able to devour this book in its entirety. However, the library requires this book be returned at the end of January of next year, so I have some time now to actually finish this book since the semester has finished...

Review: The Art of the Adventures of Tintin

The Art of the Adventures of Tintin by Chris Guise My rating: 5 of 5 stars The Art of The Adventures of Tintin was even better than I could have ever dreamed. This is my first "Art of" book, and I kind of knew what I was getting into but I was still surprised. I didn't even mean to start reading this when I started reading this. We were given an assignment in art class to design a poster for the school play and I really had no ideas. I remembered that these "Art of" books are full of concept art so I decided to flip through this one. Well, next thing I knew I wasn't just flipping through it, I was completely engrossed in it. I flipped to the first page and started properly reading it. This book was a good reading experience. Right off the bat Chris Guise lets the reader know that he's not going to bombard you with text, that he's gonna let the art do most of the talking and he's going to make the best "Ar...
