Review: Days of Blood & Starlight

Days of Blood & Starlight Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OH MY GOSH THIS WAS SO INCREDIBLY WAY BETTER THAN DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE!!!!! FIVE OUT OF FIVE FOR DAYS (of blood and starlight if ya nam sayin)!!!

So much happened. All the things happened. The thing you thought wasn't going to happen? Yeah it happens. Oh, no not THAT thing, the other one. Okay then well I guess everything BUT that one thing happens, you know, to be political correct and all. It's probably gonna happen in the last book though, let's be real.

As with the first book in this trilogy, Days of Blood and Starlight ALSO reminded me of another series I've read! Welcome to another exciting installment of: WHICH WAS PUBLISHED FIRST!?

This review we have the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series By Laini Taylor vs. The Demonblood series by Penelope King! The Demonblood series is about a girl who is human by day and demon by night. This is an extreme oversimplification of the plot for space-saving sake. It's a great series, though Penelope is slower than I'd prefer at pumping out new installments. The first thing that really struck me as being similar is that in both of these books the angels and demons are at war with each other. But of course that's how it is in every book so that one isn't so bad. Then of course is the really strong parallel that is the fact that in both stories, our protagonist is a demon in a very forbidden love with a very overpowered angel. They just both happened to fall in love with the ONE angel that is the most special snowflake in all of Special Snowflake Topia. Okay I'm exaggerating but my point stands. Also it's been years since I've read an installment in the Demonblood series so I could be talking out of my ass just a bit here but let's pretend I'm not. Ass-talking or not, the first part of my last point was for sure true, and I just couldn't help thinking about it during my reading of this book, and the first book as well.

Just one last point: in the Demonblood series there's a friggen character named Bones. BONES!!!!! Daughter of Smoke and BONES!?!?!?!!? COINCIDENCE!?!?!? Take it as you will. So now... time for the verdict. Okay now this is odd because when I checked goodreads while writing this review it said that Daughter of Smoke and Bone was published June 5th 2012, which doesn't make sense because when I wrote my review for that book it said the publish date was September 27th 2011. I'm inclined to believe the latter date though, because inside my book it says it was published 2011. EITHER WAY, whichever date is correct does not matter because the first book in the Demonblood series, A Demon Made Me Do It, was published May 27th 2011. So it looks like PENELOPE KING is the winner of this round!

Now that that tomfoolery is over, let's talk about something that annoyed me. Random. Scenes. With random new characters I do not care about in the slightest. Like come on, screw off and get back to the good stuff. (view spoiler)

So yeah I don't know what else to say. Every Time I picked it up, I absolutely did NOT want to put this baby back down. But you know, sleep. It's gotta happen sometime. But for real, there were a couple twists that just seriously screwed me up. They got me all like waving my book around like a maniac cause I'm all like, "YO WTF NO WAT NO WAY OMG YOOOOOO." Sick shit yo.

Check out my reading notes under this review for some extra... uh NOTES, and have a great day folks!

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Lulu Is a Rhinoceros

Lulu Is a Rhinoceros by Jason Flom My rating: 3 of 5 stars The second I saw the cover of this book and read the synopsis I immediately thought that this was going to be a book that uses animals to create an allegory about transsexuality, as another installment in the growing genre of kid’s LGBTQA+ books. The whole "that's what she sees when she looks in the mirror" business felt really on the nose, and I feel like the authors purposefully used this wording in order to generate buzz around this book. In actuality, this felt like any other normal kids book. You have a character who feels misunderstood by their peers, and so they go on a "journey" to find and/or prove themselves and eventually end up finding peace with who they are and/or a group who accepts them. To me, the story was told in a way that presented Lulu like any other silly character in a children's book that had a silly problem stemming from their silly misco...

Review: Bossypants

Bossypants by Tina Fey My rating: 3 of 5 stars Let me set the scene: Last week I was in Phys Ed class playing the ol' badminton. Our school only has one gym, and my class 60 kids. So you can imagine how cramped it was. Each team had 3 people on the court at a time, and yes, it was a mess. And then one of my partners slammed me in the right eyeball with their racquet. My glasses broke into three pieces as they tumbled to the hardwood gym floor. This was the second time my face had been assaulted resulting in broken frames, so you could say I was a broken-glasses veteran. With my experience I didn't freak out, just was slightly annoyed. Nothin' some good old super glue can't fix, right? So I tried to continue playing but I quickly realized that I could no longer keep my eye open. It felt extremely irritated and even if I shut just the one and kept the other open, it still hurt. When I closed both of them, then it was a little better. Re...
