My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is the second TV-show-comic-series-thing I’ve read, the first being Bob’s Burgers. Where I had never seen an episode of Bob’s Burgers and was pretty impartial to it, I have watched both seasons of Rick and Morty and can easily say that I’m a fan. It was a nice little bit of bonus content to compliment the TV show. I’m pretty sure none of it is canon though so it’s not necessarily a must-read. Just if you really like the show and want more then I say go for it. It’s more of the same type of humor and it’s with the main cast that we all love. There are even some brief cameos from other characters like Bird Person, Squanchy, and Meeseeks. (Also: by brief I mean they don’t have speaking roles, you just see them in backgrounds.)
Here are some specific things I liked. First of all, the build quality of the book was actually quite nice, and the pages had this odd rough texture which I liked. I liked that the title pages for the chapters were the covers for the corresponding Issue. It’s always annoying when I read a comic bind-up and they don’t put the original covers anywhere, because they’re usually cool looking and I want to see them, dang it! The stories and characters stayed very true to the ones we already know and love, so that was good. Something I wasn’t expecting was that instead of each Issue being its own separate story, the first few issues were actually connected which was refreshing.
If you know what OVAs are in anime, this basically felt like a collection of Rick and Morty OVAs. Except that I feel like you still end up learning new information when watching OVAs, but I don’t know if I necessarily learned anything new from this.
I’m giving this three stars because it was good. It satisfied my Rick and Morty cravings well enough, though not as much as an episode of the actual show would. In the end it just felt like it was missing something… I don’t know what. There was just nothing compelling me to rate this more than half stars.
