My rating: 5 of 5 stars
A good wholesome volume like usual. Usual. As in, not every volume. As in, we're not counting the last volume, which ENDED IN THE MIDDLE OF (view spoiler) THE CLIMAX OF AN EPIC FIGHT. Don't think I'll ever forgive Horikoshi and his team for that. Anyway, ahem, away with old news and onward with... New... News.
This was really fun to read after having just watched the first cour (half) of season 2 of the anime! There was a surprisingly high amount of callbacks to the Tournament arc which was nice since it was still fresh in my mind from having just watched it animated!
This volume finishes off the kids' final exams, which were really fun and epic to see. The fights were super hype and I can't wait to see them animated! I was happy we got to see several of the students' fights, but there were still some that I would have liked to see but were instead glossed over. I understand that it also wouldn't be good to drag things out too much, though, so I get why they did this.
Other than that, the rest of the volume was pretty chill. No more fights. Only after I finished the volume did I realize I kind of... Wanted more? The Horikoshi gang does fights just so splendidly well that I can't get enough of them. It's the opposite of Yu Yu Hakusho where I actually prefer seeing the characters interact in their day-to-day life over watching them fight. I think I feel this way because I individually like all the characters in Yu Yu more so than I do My Hero Academia's.
That might be a slight criticism I have for this series. Horikoshi did a good job of initially establishing all the characters, but by this point in the series, eight volumes in, I need more. I don't actually care all that much about most of the characters, and that's because I don't know much about them. I like Midoriya, Todoroki, and Katsuki. And All Might. And Eraser Head. These are the characters (with the exception of Eraser Head, I guess?) that have had considerably more development and significant backstory than anyone else. Give me moooooore, Horikoshi! I bolded significant backstory because in this volume we did get some backstory and development for Momo Yaoyorozu, but it wasn't anything significant enough for me to actually start caring about her or anything.
Good stuff as usual. Very probably the best shonen to ever be created. Casual.
