My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was one of my regretful impulse buys. I saw it in Superstore (back when Superstore still sold books), and like a moth to a flame I went "Oooh shiny!" and begged my mom to buy it for me. Yeah. I know. It then proceeded to sit on my bookshelf untouched for two years, and the longer it sat the more self-loathing I felt. Why did I have to be like this? What is self control?
Anyway, about 43(?) days ago I needed a new book to read. This book needed to fulfil a few requirements and Mr. Mercedes ended up being the only fully qualified candidate. And so it began.
Mr. Mercedes is about... I was actually pretty unsure how to complete that sentence. It's actually a bit more complicated than just "this is what this book is about". I can't even say too much without spoiling anything. What you need to know is that there's a seriously mentally deranged murderer named Brady and a retired detective called Bill Hodges who tries to bring him down. Sounds like any murder mystery or whatever, but it was actually pretty good and really multilayered.
My favourite aspect was being able to read from Brady's perspective. This ain't no "Who-dun-it?" as we follow both the perpitrator and the detective, and Brady's thoughts are SAVAGE. He has no censor, doesn't give a shit about being politically correct, and is just totally batshit insane. His was such an interesting perspective to read. I've never read a book where you get both of these perspectives, and that dynamic was pretty groovy.
Don't know what else to say. It was a good book. Took me a while to get through which is normal for me and adult books. It got pretty gripping at points, to the point where I never wanted to put it down and then actively wanted to pick it up. I wasn't just reading for the sake of finishing it. I went through most of the book not planning on continuing the series, but now I kinda want to. The third (and last) book even just came out a few days ago. But yeah who knows, I'm pretty bad at reading series if I don't already own all of the books.
