Review: Fable

Fable Fable by Chanda Hahn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a two-for-one book review! The first review is from my first time reading this a couple years ago, and the second review is from today, September 10th.

(This review was written more than a year after reading this book.)

I was so excited to get this book. I pre-ordered it and everything. But when I read it... This book was just a huge disappointment to me. Chanda's writing was absolutely terrible and it ruined the book for me. Maybe the writing was like this the entire series and I never noticed because I was a book novice when I started the series. I'm still pre-ordering the next book because I love Jared and the story itself is very intriguing. Plus I have very good memories of loving the first two books, so I don't want to stop reading this series. Yet? We'll see. 3/5 stars.

~~~~~
Spoiler (not really) I stopped reading the series. But I restarted it so here's my reread review!
~~~~~

I feel it's safe to say that the second time reading this was a lot better than the first. The first time I was just wayy too hyped and excited about it. 4/5 stars for round two.

I feel like a lot happened. For most of the book it was pretty contemporary. Just kinda life stuff with evil metal monsters sprinkled here and there. And then shit really goes down and Mina (I feel like you know this is going to happen one way or another the whole book so it's not a spoiler) finally goes to the Fae plane and we meet a new friend! Heheheheh.

There was a twist here and there that when they happened just made me feel so stupid. This is my SECOND time reading this and I still got really shocked. (view spoiler)

There were lots of parts of Brody being jealous and annoying.

Brody walked out the door and saw the placement of Jared's hands on her [back]. He scowled.

Like, can you not? You're dating Nan, you jerk.

But Brody wasn't the only problematic teenage boy. Jared was pretty pissy like, the whole book. Now, y'all KNOW how much I love Jared, but... ehhhh. (view spoiler)

But there was one character that actually got better: Ever. I just kind of hated her because I remember I hated her the first time I read these. But she was actually pretty cool this time around.

"NO!" Mina and Brody cried in unison, while Ever pumped her fist and yelled, "YES!"

This was when I started realizing that Ever's not as bad as I thought.

Ever looked furious, Ever looked glorious.

Iconic.

Bonus Comments on Quotes Cuz You Know I Annotated the Shit out of my Book:

Mina couldn't help but feel slightly disheveled in her discount jeans and cute rainbow tank top, blue hoodie, and converse shoes.

Mina was casually cosplaying Rainbow Dash and she didn't even know it.

"...She [Mina] likes to read, but not that smutty stuff--classics, and books that have depth to them."

Ironic.

Review: 寄宿学校のジュリエット(3)

寄宿学校のジュリエット(3) by 金田陽介 My rating: 5 of 5 stars Brb, crying. Not actually, though. Like, I didn’t shed any actual tears or even get close to it, it’s just that this series… is so good . The romance between Romeo and Juliet is still weirdly innocent, but the actual story is so engrossing and entertaining. It also seems like almost literally every single character is complex and interesting and multi-layered. (Only the background characters like Maru’s lackeys are undeveloped, but honestly they really don’t need any development anyway.) The relationships between characters keep getting more and more complex, and the situations that the characters have to deal with are also super juicy. This is such an addicting series. My initial problem with Romeo and Juliet’s relationship was that it seemed pretty unhealthy and one-sided to me. Later, I found it very weird how sexually immature they both are, and how un-intimate their relationship is. What is interest...

Review: Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War

Bitter Witness: Otto Dix and the Great War by Linda F. McGreevy My rating: 0 of 5 stars This is a very unique and interesting academic text. There are no other examinations of the German artist Otto Dix, his war experience, and his war-related art that are quite as in-depth as this one, while also covering a wide range of different aspects and angles of not only the artist's story, but also the Great War's. I used this as a source for a University research essay I wrote on the effects of Dix's war experience on the creation and effects of his painting Skat Players (1920). I was very late in starting my research so I unfortunately had to stick to only reading the information I could use for my own examination, rather than being able to devour this book in its entirety. However, the library requires this book be returned at the end of January of next year, so I have some time now to actually finish this book since the semester has finished...

Review: Spells & Sleeping Bags

Spells & Sleeping Bags by Sarah Mlynowski My rating: 3 of 5 stars This book was infuriating. Miri was super annoying during book 2, but she started this book off with some funny burns toward Rachel which made me think maybe she would be better in this book. Ha. No. She wasn’t. Miri. Oh Miri Miri Miri. So dumb. And it was annoying how it seemed like she didn’t even learn anything from the last book. She’s still all about saving the world and whatnot and being a dumbass. And she talked about poofing up money to help her help people, which is extremely illogical because she knows that poofing up money means she’s stealing money from somewhere else. Way to “help” out the world you fucking idiot. For the majority of this book I reckon she was under some kind of “emotion amplifying” spell but honestly that’s no excuse since she’s still her dumbass self.
